The Velociraptor was bigger and stronger than the Compsognathus. Compys were chicken-sized, while Velociraptors were turkey-sized. This gave the Velociraptor a huge advantage regarding strength and size. Still, Compys were almost twice as fast as Velociraptors, which meant they could escape them.

Battle Facts about Velociraptor vs. Compsognathus

Size | 5-7 feet long, 2.5-3 feet tall | 2-4.5 feet long, 7.9-11 inches tall |
Speed | 25 mph | 40 mph |
Offense | Pack hunter, quick and agile | Strong for its size and fast |
Defense | Safety in numbers, sharp claws to slash enemies | Could run almost as fast as an Ostrich |
Endurance and Behavior | Lightweight (under 50 pounds), this raptor could run 25 mph for longer distances | Very lightweight (around 7 pounds) and could run 40 mph for a long time |
You might think that a Velociraptor had an unfair advantage against a Compsognathus, but the Velociraptor was nowhere near as big in real life as they were in movies like Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.
It was turkey-sized, and a Compy was chicken-sized. If these tiny carnivorous dinosaurs had ever met in real life, the Compy would have a chance at beating the Velociraptor!
What was the difference between a Velociraptor and a Compsognathus?

The size was the biggest difference between Velociraptors and Compsognathuses. Velociraptors were around 2 feet taller than Compys and twice as long. Velociraptors also weighed around 7 times what Compys weighed!
Compys were a lot faster than Velociraptors. Velociraptors could run up to 25 mph. Compsognathuses was much faster, hitting speeds of around 40 mph!
Did Velociraptors eat the Compsognathus?

Velociraptors didn’t eat the Compsognathus. The Velociraptor and the Compsognathus lived in different times and places. Velociraptors were from Asia’s Cretaceous period, and Compys were from Europe’s Late Jurassic period.
Both Velociraptors and Compys were small carnivores that hunted and scavenged. If Velociraptors and Compsognathuses had lived in the same place, Velociraptors could eat Compys. These little Theropod dinos ate dead animals of all sizes and other small animals, herbivores, and lizards.
What Dinos lived with the Compsognathus?

An Archaeopteryx lived with the Compsognathus. The raven-sized Archaeopteryx was slightly smaller than a Compy. Sometimes a Compy ate the Archaeopteryx. The Archaeopteryx was also thought to eat young Compys and steal Compy eggs.
Until more fossil evidence is found, it’s hard to say which dinos lived around during Compy’s lifetime. Other North American and European dinos that lived around 150-130 million years ago include:
- The Allosaurus
- The Apatosaurus
- The Baryonyx
- The Diplodocus
- The Stegosaurus
What Dinos lived with the Velociraptor?

The Velociraptor lived in Mongolia and China during the Cretaceous period. Paleontologists have found so many fossils in the area that is now the Gobi Desert, as well as in China. Several species lived in this area during the Velociraptor’s lifetime, including:
- The Gallimimus
- The Tarbosaurus
- The Ankylosaurus
- The Carnotaurus
- The Edmontosaurus
- The Giganotosaurus
- The Mosasaurus
- The Parasaurolophus
- The Pteranodon
- The Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex)
- The Triceratops
Who wins the Velociraptor vs. Compsognathus battle?
The Velociraptor was most likely to win in a battle with the Compsognathus. It was bigger, stronger, and more vicious. One Velociraptor fossil was even found locked in a battle to the death with the much larger Protoceratops!
If the Compsognathus avoided getting caught by the Velociraptor, then Compy would survive the battle. But there was no way Compy could beat the Velociraptor in a full fight. Because Compy’s only strength in this battle was to run away, the Velociraptor would be the clear winner.
